Suicide Prevention

Suicide is a critical indicator of distress affecting individuals, families and communities. Suicide rates among Indigenous people in the NT are among the highest of any groups in Australia. Our teams conduct a range of research initiatives relating to suicide and its prevention. In 2012, we were commissioned by the Commonwealth Government to draft the current National ATSI Suicide Prevention Strategy based on consultations around Australia. We have conducted a study of hospitalisation involving deliberate self-harm from 2000-2014, and are investigating risk factors and pathways for suicide and self-harm for the whole NT population. Our Skills for Life program and parenting programs such as Let’s Start are evaluating the effectiveness of school and community-based prevention in reducing risks of self-harm among Indigenous children and youth.
