The relationship between foetal growth and developmental outcomes in NT children

Does birth weight affect early life development in Northern Territory children?

This project aims to: describe the distribution of birth weights in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations; examine the perinatal mortality rates in each 10th centile of standard birth weight and determine the optimal birth weight percentile for perinatal survival; determine the effect of birth weight on school readiness; and describe education outcomes by Indigenous status in children in year 3 and quantify the relationship between birth weight percentiles and educational attainment.

The aims will be achieved using a retrospective cohort design, using linked Northern Territory data. Eligible study population will include all children born between 1999 and 2008 to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal mothers in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia.
